Curriculum

Preschool–3 Year Old

Language Development
The children will listen to stories, simple poems and songs. With learning activities and music the children will learn prepositions and an understanding of opposites.

Math
Games and activities will provide for learning counting, classifying, shapes, one to one correspondence and size differences.

Social Studies
Children will learn sharing with others, give and take play and participation in a group. We will also focus on family, neighborhood and why people are alike and different.

Science
Through age appropriate activities the children will learn about animals and the environment we live in. We will learn our colors and will explore mixing and matching them.

Religion
We will develop a close relationship with God through daily Bible stories and prayer, so the children will come to realize that God is a source of love, comfort and friendship.

Art
In art we emphasize large motor coordination through painting and free drawing and small motor coordination through cutting, pasting and coloring.

Music
Students sing for joy, praise, worship and fun.


Preschool–4 Year Old

Reading Readiness
We emphasize recognition of shapes and colors. Listening skills include verbal instructions. Motor skills covers a wide range of activities that include tracing, circling, writing, cutting, coloring, left to right direction and left and right identification of hands and feet. We will also teach alphabet sounds, rhyming sounds, and spatial concepts such as over, under, top, bottom, etc.

Math
Our math curriculum includes number recognition from 1–20. We teach size comparison. Introduce the concept of addition and subtraction, visual discrimination, classification of objects (alike and different), time readiness and money (recognition of coins).

Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum includes units on the public library, fire station, police officers, safety and special days (Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day).

Science
Our Science unit focuses on weather, the calendar, magnets and zoo animals. A unit on the life cycle of butterflies is demonstrated in class.

Religion
We emphasize developing a close relationship with God through daily Bible study and prayer. This helps the students realize that God is always with us and is a source of live comfort and friendship. Bible stories taught include creation, Moses, Jonah, Joseph, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, the life of Jesus, Paul, the Disciples, the Golden Rule, and the Lord’s Prayer. Children are encouraged to participate in silent and group prayer. We also have memory work from the Bible each week.

Art
In art we emphasize large motor coordination through easel painting and free drawing, and small muscle coordination through cutting, pasting, and coloring. Students are encouraged to express their creativity through the use of different media.

Music
Students sing for joy, praise, worship and fun.

Show 'n Tell
Children are encouraged to bring one item from home to share with the class. It is a time when he can practice verbal skills as he "tells" about the item.


Kindergarten

Reading Readiness
We use the McGraw Hill phonics based series in the teaching of reading readiness. The series consist of letter books that teach oral language skills, motor skills, linguistic skills, and listening skills. Varied activities are used in the presentation of materials including class discussion, creative dramatics, rhyming, games, riddles, fables and poetry. At the completion of the letter books we begin a K/First grade McGraw Hill reading readiness workbook and practice reading skills with a series of preprimers.

Handwriting
Students are taught to write the entire alphabet with correct manuscript writing.

Math
Students will be using a program called Saxon Math, a hands on math program that will teach verbal counting from 0 to 100, simple addition and subtraction, recognizing shapes, patterns and comparisons, classification, fractions, money, geometric concepts, story problems, writing numbers and drawing shapes.

Social Studies
Social Studies in Kindergarten introduces students to communities and its function and much more! We even have our own community store called the “Kindergarten Bakery”. We also study special units on: Safety, health, hygiene, and special days.

Science
We focus on experiments, observation, as well as understanding concepts of science. Children grow their own plants, raise their own butterflies along with special units on rocks, magnets, animals and ocean creatures.

Religion
We emphasize developing a close relationship with God through daily Bible study and prayer. This helps the students realize that God is always with us and is a source of comfort and friendship. Concordia Religion curriculum uses Bible stories to teach about God’s love and promises through his Son, Jesus Christ. Children are encouraged to participate in prayer. We also have memory work from the Bible.

In addition to the core subjects listed above, Art, Music, Spanish and Physical Education are offered.


1st Grade

Reading
Reading is a very critical building block of education. In first grade, we use a phonics based strategy; the mastery of letter-sound relationships. When students are able to learn those relationships, word recognition becomes automatic, enabling them to read fluently with understanding. Children discover the pleasure of reading and become readers for life. We focus on improving and strengthening those skills.

Spelling
Our spelling curriculum is also a phonics-based curriculum and focuses on vowel sounds and rules. In the spelling curriculum we also learn sentence structure through sentence dictation.

Language Arts
The Language Arts curriculum teaches students grammatical structure as well as introducing students to literature and gives students opportunities to write using their acquired knowledge. We learn to identify complete sentences, statements, questions, nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Math
Our Math curriculum teaches thinking strategies to help children learn to problem solve. We review kindergarten skills, learn math facts through 18, learn about money, measurement, telling time, fractions, place value, two digit addition and subtraction, simple geometry and multiplication.

Social Studies
Social Studies in first grade focuses on family, neighborhood and school with a strong emphasis on history, geography and citizenship.

Science
Science in first grade introduces life science, physical science, earth science, and the human body. We learn how science works, new concepts and how to solve problems using science.

Religion
Religion is sharing time as well as learning time. We study the Bible, focusing on Bible characters and their relationships and how we apply it to our lives. We also have memory work from the Bible each week. Religion is evident in all subjects from morning opening to our closing each afternoon.

In addition to the core subjects listed above, Art, Music, Spanish and Physical Education are offered.


2nd Grade

Reading
In second grade we continue to use a phonics based strategy. In addition to the reading curriculum we use a phonics workbook. Improving reading skills and stressing a love of reading are our main goals.

Spelling
We continue to focus on vowel sounds and rules. Our vocabulary grows as we increase sentence dictation. Science and Social Studies terms are integrated into our lessons.

Language Arts
Our units alternate between grammatical structure and writing. We focus on writing narratives and descriptive paragraphs. A journal is an important part of our language class.

Handwriting
D’Nealian manuscript is reviewed during the first half of the year and modern cursive is taught during the second half of the year.

Math
We review skills already learned and delve more deeply into measurement, time, fractions, geometry, money, two digit addition and subtraction. We have an in-depth unit on multiplication through the 9’s.

Social Studies
Communities, living on the earth and America -past and present are units covered in class. We focus on living and working together in our world. Students learn the placement and spelling of the continents, oceans and all 50 states.

Science
We study life science, physical science, earth science and the human body. Experimentation and hands-on activities are an integral part of class. A favorite unit is “The Earth Long Ago”. We learn about dinosaurs and their part in creation.

Religion
Through our curriculum and the Bible we look at stories and characters as “real life” people and situations. We learn about God’s love and plan for our lives through daily devotions and prayer. Scripture memory is done weekly..

3rd Grade

Reading
Combination phonics and whole language program emphasizing increased comprehension of reading selections while learning to read for enjoyment.

Spelling
Phonics based program with some whole language, which teaches basic and challenge words each week. In addition to this program is the spelling of the 50 states and the 66 books of the Bible.

Wordly Wise
A vocabulary enrichment program emphasizing knowledge of certain words and their definitions.

Handwriting
D’Nealian form of cursive handwriting is reviewed during the first half of the year leading up to cursive being used at all times in spelling and at the students discretion in other subjects.

Language Arts
Combination grammar and whole language program which first teaches correct grammar and usage; then, allows students to use what is learned in various forms of writing.

Math
Emphasis on three digit addition and subtraction, money, telling time to minutes, measurement, fractions, and geometry, with the most important goal being the memorization and retention of multiplication and division facts through 9’s.

Social Studies
Focuses on communities near and far while emphasizing history, geography, economics and citizenship; in addition, students learn the location of the 50 states by first labeling maps of small areas of the U.S., working up to labeling all 50 states.

Science
Combination of “book learning” and experiments to teach aspects of physical, life, earth science and the human body.

Latin
This first year Latin study is to introduce 3rd grade students to basic Latin. Students will learn proper spelling, pronunciation, definitions and conjugation of approximately 350 words.

Religion
Old and New Testament stories emphasizing that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that through our belief in Him, we gain eternal life - included in the program is the weekly memorization of Bible verses.

4th Grade

Reading
We build and strengthen vocabulary and comprehension along with reading and writing skills in phonics based curriculum. We also read books by various authors for enhancement and enjoyment.

Spelling
Each week we will have a spelling lesson that deals with appropriate age level words that include basic and challenge words.

Wordly Wise
A vocabulary program emphasizing knowledge of certain words and their definitions.

Language Arts
Our Language Arts curriculum alternates a grammar unit with a writing unit. This helps focus on correct language usage along with clear and concise written expression to be used in letter writing, projects and reports throughout the year.

Math
The basic math skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are utilized throughout the year. Two and three digit multiplication and division is stressed. Word problems and reasoning skills help students apply their skills by using the thought process. The year ends with the study of fractions and decimals.

Social Studies
A study of the different regions of the U. S. and Texas history helps the students to get a broader picture of our state and our country. Contained in each chapter are skill pages focusing on map reading skills, current events, people, decision making and basic geography skills. Each student writes a report on a Country and a President of their choice to be shared with the class.

Science
Our science is divided into several units of study: life, physical and earth science. We also learn about the human body. In life science we learn about plants and animals. Physical science covers measuring matter, work and energy, light and sound. Earth science includes landforms, oceans, weather and the solar system. Finally we learn about digestion, circulation, our brain and our senses.

Latin
Latin is taught as a second language. Students learn to conjugate words as well as derivatives to an extensive list of vocabulary words.

Religion
For our Bible Study each day we use the Bible based Concordia Series for the fourth grade. We begin with Genesis and study several of the Old Testament characters. As the year progresses we move into the New Testament with the Christmas story, miracles of Jesus, Parables, the Easter story and stories from the early church. Bible memorization is also stressed with a curriculum that builds from preschool through fifth grade.

5th Grade

Reading
We read classical and contemporary literature in a variety of fiction and non-fiction selections. These selections include stories, poetry and plays. We learn vocabulary and language skills along with learning to comprehend what we read. Each unit is introduced with a read aloud book.

Spelling
Each week we will have a spelling lesson that deals with appropriate age level words that include basic and challenge words. We also work on spelling rules, dictionary skills and proofreading skills in our weekly lessons.

Wordly Wise
15 words are in our weekly vocabulary lesson. We learn to spell these words along with learning their definitions.

Language Arts
The curriculum alternates grammar and writing units. The grammar unit includes the 8 parts of speech, the mechanics of writing (punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations), and word usage. The writing units include descriptive writing, writing directions, letter writing, personal narratives and stories. Proofreading and revising are important skills practiced in the writing units.

Math
The basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are used throughout the year. We use these skills with decimals and fractions as well as whole numbers. We do a unit on geometry and a unit on ratio and probability. We learn to use metric units of measurement, mass, and capacity. Math facts and mental math are stressed throughout the year.

Social Studies
Our curriculum is American History. We begin with the earliest explorers and continue through the present day. Extra time is spent on topics such as the Civil War and the American Revolution. We also study the geography of each region of the U.S.

Science/Health
The science curriculum is a study of life, physical and earth sciences. The human body is studied during science also. Life science includes plants, vertebrates, invertebrates and ecology. Physical science includes matter, heat energy and energy resources. Earth science includes the earth, the environment, the climate and astronomy.

Latin
Our curriculum covers the very basics of Classical Latin. We learn to correctly pronounce Latin letters and words and acquire a vocabulary of up to 350 words. We learn to recognize Latin derivatives in English and how to conjugate verbs.

Religion
For our Bible study each day we use the Bible based Concordia Series. During the fall we do an in-depth study of the life of Martin Luther. Bible memorization is stressed along with daily devotion and prayer.
